The Breed

What Is an Aussiechon?

An Aussiechon is a cross between a Miniature American Shepherd and a Bichon Frise. When thoughtfully bred, this pairing combines the intelligence and athleticism of the Mini Aussie with the cheerful, easygoing nature of the Bichon โ€” along with a lower to non-shedding coat and a highly people-oriented temperament.

At Trailside, our goal is not to produce random mixes. We are intentionally building a structured, multi-generational program designed to preserve the strengths of both breeds while selecting carefully for temperament, coat predictability, and health.

Why We Chose This Cross

We chose the Bichon Frise very intentionally. The Bichon brings a naturally non-shedding coat, a sturdy and healthy small-breed structure, a balanced muzzle, and a stable and confident temperament โ€” lap-dog affection with playful energy, and intelligence without excessive intensity.

Bichons are cheerful, adaptable, and deeply bonded to their people. They are typically not sharp, nervous, or high-strung. When paired thoughtfully with the Miniature American Shepherd, the result is a dog that is smart and biddable, athletic but with an off switch, playful yet cuddly, and deeply family-oriented.

A Personal Note

I grew up with a Bichon mix and have always loved the breed's joyful personality. This addition to our program is both strategic and meaningful.

What the Bichon Brings

  • Naturally non-shedding coat
  • Sturdy, healthy small-breed structure
  • Balanced muzzle (not flat-faced)
  • Stable, confident temperament
  • Lap-dog affection with playful energy
  • Intelligence without excessive intensity

What to Expect

  • High intelligence and trainability
  • Moderate, adaptable energy
  • Strong bonding to family
  • Lower to non-shedding coats
  • Confidence without excessive intensity

Think: adventure companion who also enjoys downtime.

Why Trailside

Benefits of a Trailside Aussiechon

01
Intelligence Without Extreme Intensity
You get the trainability of a herding breed with a softer edge โ€” capable and quick to learn, without the relentlessness of a working line dog.
02
Lower Shedding
Our current generation is low-shedding. We are intentionally building toward non-shedding lines while maintaining approximately 66% Mini Aussie genetics.
03
Balanced Temperament
Playful and engaged โ€” but typically more adaptable than a full herding dog. Raised in our home with children, noise, and daily life.
04
Family-Friendly
These dogs bond deeply with their people. They are not aloof, not sharp, not nervous. They want to be wherever you are.
05
Multi-Generational Planning
We are not producing one-off litters. We are building consistency through genetic testing, intentional selection, and long-term program structure.
06
Health-First Breeding
Both parents carry full OFA certifications and DNA panels. We are transparent about every result โ€” including what we're still working toward.
Which Is Right For You?

Mini Aussie vs. Aussiechon

Both are exceptional dogs. But they are built for different lifestyles. Here's how to think about the choice.

Miniature American Shepherd

May be the right fit if you...

  • Enjoy structured training and sport
  • Want a true working-style partner
  • Are highly active
  • Don't mind moderate shedding
  • Love drive and intensity

Aussiechon

May be the right fit if you...

  • Want lower to non-shedding
  • Prefer a slightly softer energy level
  • Still value intelligence and athletic ability
  • Want a strong cuddle companion
  • Prefer adaptability over intensity

Not sure which is right for you? Reach out โ€” we're happy to talk through your lifestyle and help you find the right fit, even if that means pointing you toward a different breed entirely.

Dentition
Missing teeth noted
Coco's dentition exam notes missing teeth โ€” a common cosmetic finding in the Bichon Frise breed that does not affect health or quality of life. OFA hip x-rays are scheduled June 2026 and this page will be updated with results.

Why Coco's CDDY Result Is Exceptional

Coco is N/N for Chondrodystrophy โ€” homozygous normal, meaning she carries two copies of the healthy gene. She cannot pass IVDD risk to any offspring regardless of the stud. IVDD is the spinal disc disease that causes sudden paralysis and costs $5,000โ€“$10,000 in emergency surgery. Most Bichon breeders never test for this. Coco's result is the gold standard.
