What Is an Aussiechon?

An Aussiechon is a cross between a Miniature American Shepherd and a Bichon Frise.

When thoughtfully bred, this pairing combines:

• The intelligence and athleticism of the Mini Aussie
• The cheerful, easygoing nature of the Bichon
• A lower to non-shedding coat influence
• A highly people-oriented temperament

At Trailside, our goal is not to produce random mixes.
We are intentionally building a structured, multi-generational program designed to preserve the strengths of both breeds while selecting carefully for temperament, coat predictability, and health.

Why We Chose This Cross

We chose the Bichon Frise very intentionally.

The Bichon brings:

• A naturally non-shedding coat
• A sturdy, healthy small-breed structure
• A balanced muzzle (not flat-faced)
• A stable, confident temperament
• Lap-dog affection with playful energy
• Intelligence without excessive intensity

Bichons are cheerful, adaptable, and deeply bonded to their people. They are typically not sharp, nervous, or high-strung.

When paired thoughtfully with the Miniature American Shepherd, the goal becomes:

Smart and biddable
Athletic but with an off switch
Playful yet cuddly
Family-oriented
Lower to non-shedding

On a personal note, I grew up with a Bichon mix and have always loved the breed’s joyful personality. This addition to our program is both strategic and meaningful.

While every puppy is an individual, our Aussiechons are being selected for:

• Lower to non-shedding coats (with future generations aiming for fully non-shedding)

They are not typically as driven as a pure Mini Aussie — but they are still athletic and capable.
