Become a Trailside Guardian Home
Give one of our boys his forever family — while becoming part of Trailside.
A Couch, a Family, and a Purpose
One of the things that matters most to us is that every Trailside dog gets to live first and foremost as someone’s beloved family dog.
Our Stud Guardian Home Program allows a carefully selected family to welcome one of our exceptional breeding males into their home as their own companion, while Trailside retains breeding rights for a short, clearly defined period.
When his breeding career is finished, he is neutered and becomes fully yours — but your home has been his home all along.
The Best of Both Worlds
We don’t believe a breeding dog needs to spend his life living in a large group of intact dogs just because he’s valuable to our program.
Guardian homes let our boys have the best of both worlds: a couch, a family, adventures, individual attention, and all the everyday experiences of being someone’s dog — while still contributing their wonderful health, temperament, and genetics to future Trailside puppies. It also allows us to maintain genetic diversity without continually adding more dogs to our own household.
What’s In It for You?
Quite a lot, actually. Beyond the joy of the dog himself, guardian families receive real, tangible benefits.
What Being a Guardian Looks Like
Most of the time, it looks exactly like ordinary dog ownership. He lives with you and sleeps at your house. You train him, walk him, take him places, celebrate his birthday, buy him ridiculous toys, and make him part of your family.
We Take Care of the Breeding
Periodically, Trailside will need him for breeding. Our stud guardians should be comfortable with their dog staying with us for short breeding-related visits — generally only a couple of times per year. Because he returns to a reproductive environment, guardian families also agree to follow our health, nutrition, parasite-prevention, and biosecurity protocols.
You Give Him the Everyday Life
The rest of the time — which is nearly all of it — he’s simply your dog. The morning walks, the road trips, the spot on the couch, the birthday photos. That everyday life with a family who adores him is exactly what we want for every Trailside boy.
What We’re Looking For
The right guardian home matters far more to us than simply finding the closest one. We’re looking for people who:
- genuinely want this particular dog as a family member;
- communicate reliably with us;
- are comfortable working together for the duration of his short breeding career;
- are willing to follow Trailside’s nutrition and preventive-health recommendations;
- can safely manage an intact male dog;
- will keep him as a family companion with regular time spent indoors and out;
- have reliable transportation; and
- are willing to help with transportation when he’s needed by Trailside.
What Happens When He Retires
Once Trailside decides his breeding career is complete, we pay for his neuter and transfer full ownership to his guardian family.
No starting over.
No saying goodbye to the family he loves.
He simply stops being a breeding dog and spends the rest of his life doing exactly what he was already doing:

Guardian homes aren’t selected first-come, first-served — we’re looking for families whose lifestyle, expectations, and home are genuinely a great fit for the individual dog. If welcoming a wonderful Trailside dog into your family while helping us raise the next generation sounds exciting, we’d love to hear from you.
